Health and Medicine

Medicine in Washington, DC was more medieval than modern until the 20th century. At the end of the 19th century, one in seven people around the world had died of tuberculosis. In Washington, DC it was the leading cause of death. Medically, it was anything but the ‘good old days.’ The death rate fell from 31.3 in 1900 to 0.1 per 100,000 in 1950.
